What is Pilates?
Pilates is a low impact exercise method developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. there are two main types of Pilates.

1. Matwork Pilates - This is done on a mat using your body weight and small props such as resistance bands or weighted balls.

2. Reformer pilates - This uses a specialised machine called a refomer, which adds resistance through springs and pulleys for a deeper workout.

Here at The Coastal Clinic I offer both matwork and reformer Pilates. Matwork can be done either as a group session or private 1 to 1 if this is better suited to you. Refomer Pilates is offered as private 1 to 1 sessions either to work on personal fitness goals or injury rehabilition.
Why Do Pilates?
Pilates is considered to be highly beneficial because it focuses on core strength, flexibility, posture, and controlled movement, making it a well-rounded form of exercise.
Some of the reasons why its so effective:
Core strength: Pilates targets deep abdominal and back muscles, improving overall stability and reducing the risk of injury.
Posture & Alignment: It emphasizes proper body alignment, which helps with posture and can relieve chronic back or neck pain.
Low Impact: Its gentle on joints, making it accessible to people of all fitness levels, including those recoverig from injury,
Flexibility & Mobility: The stretching components increase muscle elasticity and joint mobility.
Mind- Body Connection: Pilates encourages mindful movement and controlled breathing, enhancing body awareness and focus.
Functional Fitness: It strengthens muscles used in everyday activities, which can improve movement efficiencyand balance.

History of Pilates
Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early twentieth century as a new approach to exercise and body conditioning. He was a sickly child and took part in many forms of exercise throughout his life to get stronger and healthier. During World War 1 the British interned him as a German enemy alien. He used this time to develop what we now know as Pilates.
In 1923 Joseph Pilates moved to America and opened his first studio in New York. His new method was an instant hit, particularly with dancers. They found Pilates was the best way both to recover from injuries and to prevent their recurrence.
Joseph Pilates developed his method as a mental as well as a physical conditioning in which individuals could work their bodies to their full potential.
